Consumers have no easy way of choosing one hospital over another. Sure, there is information buried somewhere online about the number of mainline infections one hospital has. But few people take the time to do the search and fewer still would even know where to look. However, mainline infections are totally preventable if proper precautions are taken by a hospital (mostly nurses need to sanitize their hands a great deal more than they do now). In an average hospital, mainline infections lead to around 100 preventable deaths each year. So what's the solution? It's the same solution California enacted to fix the sanitation problems we had in our restaurants.

All hospitals in California should be required by law to post a letter grade "A," "B," "C," "D," or "F" on their front entrance in a large visible poster format. Earning an "A" grade will mean that the hospital has only a few preventable infection deaths each year (of course we'd need to adjust by the number of patients that hospital sees). But, if a hospital gets an "F" grade, everybody in the hospital will know it and they will be shamed into washing their hands more frequently. This is not a trivial issue. It could add up to thousands of lives and millions of dollars saved in our state alone. And it is entirely fixable, if consumers are empowered with this simple knowledge and hospitals are forced to wear the "scarlet letter" of their shortcomings in stopping preventable death.

A few years ago California did this for restaurants and within a short time, the majority of the dirty restaurants cleaned up their acts because they knew it would cost them business otherwise. Hospital death from preventable infection is a far more serious issue than clean restaurants. This should be a no-brainer.

I know that you have email spam issues, but this is not a good reason to not publish a government email address for your constituents. Apparently, you have already published one for yourself as Speaker, albeit not in all the places where it should be published, so why not go all the way and publish one for your constituents.

Please tell the U.S. House Of Representatives to publish their email addresses on their websites and please do the same.

This would be an excellent first step in government transparency.

Dear Gerry,

Please publish your email address on your website. Many Congresspersons fail to do this. They force their constituents to use a webform. Webforms prevent people from keeping a copy of their communication and also prevent users from sending a carbon copy or blind carbon copy to their friends. It also forces users to use your complaint categories. I know that you don't want to give out a working email address because it allows spam to enter, but your webform prevents people from publishing their grievances to you - it forces a more private form of communication. This may be good for you, but not for us. At the Petition Archives, we are trying to increase government transparency. If you cannot give out a public email to your constituents then you should not allow it to be given out to private companies like Capitol Advantage or Convio. What we need is either a public email address or a public API to send messages to Congress. If you create a public API for contituent communication, it needs the ability for people to make their messages public. We have a right to publish our grievances to any government official, and we have a right that these petitions be formally entered and preserved in the public record. Why isn't the Library of Congress doing this for petitions to Congress? Until we have something like this, we will have to use the Petition Archives. It is sad that we have to have the Petition Archives.

Health education for children will have a great influence on their future lives. Although schools teach children nutritional knowledge and encourage them to eat healthy food and drinks,
Coke and other beverage companies still market their unhealthy brands to young consumers in schools. Those companies should only sell water or low sugar juice.

Recently, YouTube suspended the account of the James Randi Educational Foundation. This kind of treatment is becoming a trend for high-profile YouTube users who are outwardly critical of religion. We hope that YouTube will resist the sanctimonious outcry of religious fundamentalists (or any other idealogical affiliation) who already exert undue influence on government policy, television, and radio. Before suspending user accounts, determine if the complaints are substantiated and not founded on irrelevant, reactionary principles. Moreover, users who abuse the flagging system, or complain without just cause, should be penalized.

Recently asked to step down as CEO of General Motors, Rick Wagoner led the company through a difficult period in the company's history. On his watch, GM's value fell over 90%, and its rapid decline has sent a ripple effect through the American economy and the families of hardworking Americans. Instead of focusing on the development of fuel-efficient vehicles of the future, Wagoner encouraged poor-performance & gas-guzzling cars which has led to an American auto industry that is today a decade behind its competition.

While he was facing difficult odds, Wagoner consistently failed to lead the company through difficult times, or make wise decisions on behalf the company and its employees. Now, after being asked to step down by the Obama administration in order to give GM a small chance of surviving, he's being given, according to the Wall Street Journal, $20 million in pension benefits.[1] This is unacceptable, especially due to the fact that union workers will have to cut their pensions in order to keep GM running. The man who failed the company is being rewarded, while the individuals who built it with hands are being punished. We can't stand for this.

I submit my petition to bring attention to this problem, and demand that Rick Wagoner donate a large portion of his pension to the union workers of General Motors. I also request a sincere apology, and acknowledgment that he made mistakes in his judgment during his nine years as CEO of GM.

We have a clumsy, entangled, confusing measuring system! And it not only confuses the rest of the world - no, it perplexes Americans themselves!

If you go to buy carpeting, and you need 100 square feet, the carpet costs $10 per square yard, could you, even given these simple numbers, ever figure out how much you'll pay? Which is more, 2 quarts, 5 pints or 36 fl oz? How many pints are in a gallon? How many pounds are 200 ounces? Which drill is the larger - the 13/64, the 1/4 or the 5/32? Two cities on a map are 10 inches apart - what is their real world distance?

Please, let the United States join the rest of the world and switch to the metric system today!!
